SLOGAN T-SHIRTS WHERE IT ALL BEGANThe early 80's was a hard time for democracy. People were feeling voiceless and powerless. Thatcher was aligning herself with Reagan - railroading us into senseless wars like the Falklands. It was the time of Greenham Common and yet there was a European-wide proliferation of cruise and Pershing missiles, although 58% of the population was opposed (see picture of KH with Margaret Thatcher). Democracy hadn't delivered, protest wasn't working. Voices were falling on deaf ears. ENTER SLOGAN T-SHIRTSIn 1983 I launched the world's first slogan t-shirts. Slogans such as 'CHOOSE LIFE' became part of a movement to effect change. To this day my slogan t-shirts are copied, worn and reiterated. From a fashion perspective it's flattering. From a political perspective, it's exactly what I set out to achieve - to sow seeds of change and help people create a voice. SLOGAN T-SHIRTS TODAYIn 2007 there is as much need for change and public debate as ever. Globally, people want their opinions heard on matters such as the Iraq war and global warming. Take action. Have a voice. Buy the original Katharine Hamnett slogan t-shirts: CHOOSE LIFEThis all-encompassing slogan came from a Buddhism exhibition. Appropriation attempted by the anti-abortion lobby. KH (pro-choice) is taking it back. CLEAN UP OR DIEIf we don't mend our ways, life on earth could cease to exist. BRING BACK GODNobody knows how life started. Darwinism is just part of the answer and all other possibilities have to be considered equally including a supernatural one. The right to believe in a God is one of our civil liberties. WORLDWIDE NUCLEAR BAN NOWNuclear Power is dirty, dangerous and expensive. There are cleaner, safer, cheaper, longer-term alternatives. EDUCATION NOT MISSLESTax-payers want their money spent on education rather than on expensive weapons that we're never likely to use. Education is the source of a nation's wealth. YOU/MEWe all feel the same and want the same things. We are one. PEACEFellowship of men. The dream of the universe. LOVEWithout love, we are nothing. USE A CONDOMHIV is on the increase worldwide. Condoms, next to abstinence, are the best way to avoid infection. Practice safer sex because there is no cure. MAKE TROUBLEQuestion everything. Just because it is convention or the law doesn't mean it is right. Nor does it mean it can't be changed. SAVE THE RAINFORESTSEven more urgent than it was in the 80's: rainforests are being cleared worldwide to make way for biomass plantations because of the energy industry's insistence that biofuels help climate change. Concentrated Solar Thermal Power is far superior to biomass, uses one hundredth of the landmass, requires no water, is carbon neutral and cheaper than coal. SAVE THE WORLDWe can do it. How we consume decides the future of the planet. STOP AND THINKThis was about the war on terror. Instead of bombing the country that Osama bin Laden was visiting it would've been better to ask why these people hate us so much. Have they been driven to this point by oppression, exploitation and injustice and racism and our hideous colonial past and post-colonial present? NO WARWar is the worst environmental disaster ever. The money spent on war could deliver fresh water and medicine to every child in the world. LEADERS SUCKWell don't they? Look at the mess they have got us into. We don't need leaders. We need Swiss style democracy with nationwide referendums on all issues and government policy decided by the results. STAY ALIVE IN 85Creation is threatened by our industry and our politicians. |
